Perspective Is Key: Unlocking opportunity in the clean energy and technology space

The Inflation Reduction Act dominated headlines throughout Q3. In our first Perspective Is Key of Q4, Jonas Grankvist, Managing Director of Liberty Street Advisors, Inc. and Portfolio Manager of The Private Shares Fund, weighs in on how the energy provisions of the bill may impact private market investment activity in the clean energy space:

  • Renewable energy investments have increased steadily over the last decade. However, the sector has historically been difficult to invest in, requiring far more capital and much longer development time than traditional venture capital and private equity sectors. Additionally, a changing political spectrum, with short timelines and last-minute extensions for tax credits and other incentives, has created boom-bust cycles.
  • The Inflation Reduction Act seems to signal that the United States is dedicated to the sector for the long term. From an investment perspective, the climate provisions included in the bill should provide companies with longer runways to plan and build facilities and projects to generate better outcomes, while investors should have the flexibility to execute on much longer investment horizons. Clean technology and similar subsectors have a number of compelling drivers; it seems the bill has the potential to unlock vast opportunities across the sector.
  • Looking forward, we believe some of the best investors will be those that remain patient. Opportunities may come in droves, but we believe companies that separate themselves will have sophisticated management teams in place, who will use their high-caliber technology and an innovation-driven approach to simultaneously limit emissions and improve the bottom line. Solar technology, EVs and battery storage are just a few subsectors that stand out.
